Semester and year: Spring 2009
Course number and section: Look for ITCC 1402 8201 in the online schedule
Course Title: CCNA 1: Networking Fundamentals
Instructor:
Course Preview: Network Fundamentals introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. It uses the OSI and TCP layered models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, data link, and physical layers. The principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum. Labs use a "model internet" to allow students to analyze real data without affecting production networks. Packet Tracer activities help students to analyze protocol and network operation and build small networks in a simulated environment. At the end of the course, students build simple LAN topologies by applying basic principles of cabling; performing basic configurations of network devices, including routers and switches, and implementing IP addressing schemes.
Textbooks and Other Course Materials: 1: Course material is available online
2: Ordinary classroom supplies are used
Learning Outcomes: 1: Students will learn fundamental computer networking terms, concepts, and components.
2: Students will develop skills in basic network configuration, connectivity, and testing using workstations, hubs, routers, and switches.
3: Students will develop skills in cable construction and testing, small model LAN and WAN construction, IP Addressing and subnetting.
4: Skills and techniques in critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving will be applied.
Evaluation Procedures: Students will be evaluated on their performance in the course. There is an exam for each chapter, a final comprehensive exam, and a practical lab final exam. The average on the chapter exams will comprise 20% of the final grade. The Practical Lab Exam and the comprehensive Final Exam each will count 40% of the final grade.

Point ranges for each grade:
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 0-59
Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend class regularly and to consult with your instructor whenever an absence is necessary.
