Advanced Intercultural Competence I (Level 3B):
Integrating and Reframing World Views

The developmental task is to resolve the multicultural identity.

The Experience - participants will be given suggestions for interacting with a culture or activity which is out of their immediate comfort zone or usual group. Each will actively practice the skills of negotiation, flexibility, and empathy within shifting cultural frames to experience first-hand cultural marginality.

The formal session will allow participants to share their experience and debrief their learning. The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity will be reviewed as well as the attributes of transcultural competence.

Objectives

  • Solve cross-cultural conflict
  • Practice flexibility and empathy within shifting cultural frames
  • Recognize cultural marginality (awareness)
  • Construct new frames for cultural identity (identity flexibility)
  • Celebrate and laugh with cultural differences
